Historic Map Works Library Edition is one of the most extensive digital map collections available, with over 200,000 high-resolution, full color historic maps.
The core of the collection consists of property and land ownership maps illustrating the geographic and development history of the United States. This unique content allows genealogists, historians, and researchers to track the “residential genealogy” of families and locations.
Historic Map Works collections include:
- Property Maps, over 100,000 maps covering the development of the United States since the late 1700’s to the present
- Antique Maps, over 100,000 antiquarian maps covering the world from the 15th to 19th centuries, drawn from the University of Southern Maine’s Osher Map Library
- City Directories & Illustrations, thousands of related listings, images, business ads, and statistics
The special attention to image quality allows users to see incredible detail that supports research into ancestral lands, land boundaries and structures, geographic names and locations, community growth, topography, and more.
Plus, with collections that span decades and centuries, researchers can easily examine change over time-from big cities to small rural areas around the world.
The straightforward interface lets users search Historic Maps Works by keywords, location names, and other advanced features. They can also easily browse the collections using an intuitive point-and-click world map. Other features such as image previews, zoom in/out, and image cropping make reviewing and using the maps easy.
Leave your comments about this database and let me know if we should buy it.

Database Trial – DragonSource Qikan Chinese Online Reading Room October 30, 2008

A database of 2000 of China’s most well-known and circulated titles of magazines and journals are available in three formats – Text base, PDF and audio. Text based version covers 1997 to the present. Currently, PDF and audio cover from 2006 to the present but there are plans to provide older issues in the near future.
Patrons can browse by title or topic as well as search across all the publications.
I have included a PowerPoint – product-show_97-2003_format (double click the link and it takes a few minutes to load) to help you understand the database better.
Con: searching can only be done in the Chinese Language. This might be an issue with patrons using the database in-house. However, we did discover patrons could go to google.com.cn, type into the google search box a word to search, copy the Chinese characters, then go to the database and paste the characters into a search box on DragonSource and execute the search. So there is a work around for in-house patrons who wish to search the magazines rather than browse.
Pro: Great resource for our Chinese patrons
So what do you think about the library purchasing this database? Take the poll and feel free to leave comments.

I was looking for some Reference books with historical timelines and events and ran across the Annual Register: World Events. The entire series is now online (dating back to 1758). I was playing around with the demo, and this seems like a really user-friendly and useful tool, especially for student reports. It is available through Proquest.

Global Road Warrior
World Trade Press is a publishing company specializing in topics of international trade, development, culture and cartography.
