Tonight when we reboot the Encore server the BookBag will become known as eMail List.  I’m hoping this will help the patrons who are confused by how the BookBag was acting in Encore compare to the Classic Catalog.

What’s Different in Encore? October 16, 2009

Now that we have been using Encore for almost two weeks, what have you or your patrons found different with Encore?

One thing to point out, if you or your patrons are using the book bag to request multiple titles in the Classic Catalog, you will find in Encore this is not what the Book  Bag does.  The user can use Book Bag to send themselves or someone else either brief information or full information about the item but no holds are placed. In order to place a hold the user needs to use the Request It link.

Share what other ‘features’ you have found.

On Monday night we updated Encore to 3.3. This solved a mystery issue we experienced on Monday with encore related searchesthe library names being in code. We also have new features which one is currently turned on. After a search if you scroll to the bottom of the results page you will notice the Tag Cloud of Related Searches appears at the bottom as well as at the top of the page.

As we decide on which to new features to turn on I will update up on them.

We will be launching Encore for our patrons on Monday morning.  The search box at the top of the home page will become an Encore search box.  They will also be offered both the classic catalog and Encore when they select Library Catalog from the left side navigation on the Library’s website.

Encore works well in most browser but there is slight issue with Internet Explorer 8.  It functions just fine but the top looks a little messy with the search box overlapping the word Search.  To fix the issue, any patrons using IE8 and Encore (starting Monday) will need to set their IE8 settings to Compatibility mode for at least Encore.  I recommend that they set it for all websites.

To set Compatibility mode in IE8

  • Open IE8 browser select Tools
  • Select Compatibility View

That’s it!

Want to try Encore before the big launch?  Go to Voyager and enter a search in the second search box which reads Find Books, DVDs & More.

Features only found in Encore:

  • Results page shows a teaser of what is available for each item
  • Explore link brings some database searches for their search to their finger tips
  • Classic Catalog takes the patron to the old catalog where they will have to reenter their search
  • Tagging – patrons can now tag any record in the system.  This is moderated by the Virtual Library.  Tags will only appear instantly in Encore if we have globally accepted them in the past.  Any new tags will not appear until we have looked at them. Tags do not appear in the Classic Catalog
  • Patrons can also use their tags to search by. For an example try “picture book” (include the quotes) then scope to AudioBk Downld to see 8 titles I marked as picture book which reside in OverDrive.
  • Tag Cloud is made up of the subject headings found on the MARC records in the catalog
  • Refine by Library Location – this is really cool and not available in Classic Catalog except for NLV, Boulder and Nellis.
  • Refine by Publish Year - in the classic catalog we can sort by year with the most current year at the top but here you can pick one year.
  • Refine by Language – not just Spanish but all our Languages are listed.

Let us know what you think and what the patrons are saying about Encore.

Encore Question September 21, 2009

I had a very good question about Encore today.  A staff member started using Encore to see how it was going to impact her work as well as the patrons.  Once of things she noticed was Encore does not display the number of holds on a title.  The display is not on the brief nor the Bib.  Well, the good news – this is an enhancement to be found in Encore 3.3 which is currently in Beta and soon to be released.  According to Rice Majors – Product Manager the number of holds will display the same way in Encore as they do in the Classic Catalog.

On voyager our Encore search box disappeared for several days.  We are not sure how it happened but it is now back for your enjoyment.  We are still waiting on III to fix a Syndethics link – Fict./Bio.  It is software development and I have no time frame as to when it will be resolved.  The Explore link is mine to fix and I hope to get to it in the next two weeks.  Once these two items are resolved, we will be launching it for the public.  It will not replace the ‘classic catalog’ but will be in addition to the classic catalog.

Got comments?  We would love to here any suggestions you for improving this catalog.

Encore Search on Voyager June 4, 2009

As of Thursday morning (June 4) the Encore search box is now available on Voyager. You are welcome to use Encore anytime. This interface for the Library is fully functional and what occurs in Encore instantly occurs in the Classic Catalog (WebPac) and vice versa. Encore is only available in-house at this time as we are waiting on a couple of fixes.  Please leave your comments here on Virtual Library Notes.
Known Issues:

  • Summary and Fic/Bio links do not display any content.
  • Explore link is not setup yet – I’m working on it.
  • Classic Catalog link does to different locations
    • Full Bib Record Classic Catalog goes to the record you are on in Encore – this seems correct.
    • The Classic Catalog link at the top of all pages goes to Advanced Search page in the Classic Catalog.  Should this link be renamed or should the link function the same as the other Classic Catalog link ?

Why use encore?

  • Keyword searchers will finding it much better than the classic catalog. If you are an advanced searcher then this interface is not for you.
  • It’s faster, especially when the Library Catalog slows down in the afternoon.
  • It’s available when the classic catalog is off line.

Seeking input to this question – If you login into Encore then go to the classic catalog you are not logged in.  I’m not sure about this one as being an issue but If you login on the classic after logging in on Encore then logout on Encore, as soon as you do something in the classic catalog you get logged out.  Should the logging system work this way?

Encore

Encore is a front end to the catalog for keyword searching only. III describes it as a ‘discovery’ tool. It’s for patrons who don’t know what they are looking for and want to do a ‘google’ type search in the catalog. Once results are found the patron can then narrow down the results my using what is call ‘facets’ aka limits like format, publication date, language or collections.

Westerville Public Library is a good example: http://www.westervillelibrary.org/

                Enncore page 2
Click picture to enlarge

On the right side of the results it provides 3 “Recently Added”.  Since it takes the last 3 bib records added to the system (by cat date) (they could be old books) westerville choose to relabel the section “Popular Choices”, which they may or may not be.  There another section for other searches and then the “tag cloud” which in this case are the subject headings assigned by catalogers.  Patrons can not add their own tags.

For patrons who know what they want i.e. a specific author or title or subject, they need to use Web Pac Pro (our current catalog).  This makes Encore a supplement to the catalog not a replacement. Libraries are struggling with how to best present a search option(s) to patrons.

There are alternatives which might do a better job of presenting the catalog to patrons. Here are few to view and leave your comments as to what you like or dislike about them.

Ann Arbor Public Library uses Drupal

Plymouth State uses Scribilio, (wordpress blog software with an III API) allows patrons to “review or comment on items, allows patron tags and provides up to date holdings information.

Aurora Public Library uses a script to pull into the results page the limiting options found in advance search to refine the search.

RSS Feeds and Library News

Library news can be generated in RSS Feed format so patrons could sign up for an RSS feed and get the lastest information about library events, books, etc.  RSS feeds can also be added into the library catalog to keep patrons informed.  There are two ways patrons can view feeds:

1. FireFox and IE7 have build-in feed readers.  On IE7 look up at the top of your browser, do you see a little orange square? if not hold down the ctrl+shift+J keys all together and your feed list opens up under “Favorites”.  Here’s what I have:

2. Use a search engine like iGoogle or My Yahoo to display your feeds.  The advantage to this method, you can use any computer connected to the Internet to see them.  The first option, provides for them only on one computer. Here’s what my iGoogle feeds look like:
iGoogle Feeds

That was the morning sessions onto the afternoon sessions.
