E.B. White struggled to find a strong beginning for Charlotte’s Web. He wrote at least eight different versions attempting to use the barn as a setting before he created the strong opening lines, ‘Where’s Papa going with that ax?’, which actively pulls us into the story. His ending words were in his mind from the beginning: ‘It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both,” according to Cambridge Guide to Children’s Books in English (Cambridge), one of thousands of titles available in the Gale Virtual Reference Library.
