Dear Freegal Customers,
I just wanted to share some important and exciting news about the Freegal Music Service.
Library Ideas has reached a deal with IODA Alliance to bring their roster of incredible music to our service. This is the centerpiece of a Freegal 3.0 Initiative (1.0 was launch, 2.0 was refinements and the subscription offering) which includes:
++Increased search and browse capabilities
++New look to the site
++overseas launch to many parts of the world.
Who is IODA Alliance? IODA is one of the largest digital aggregators in the world. Very few labels are big enough to distribute themselves, so they have people like IODA do it for them. I don’t know of a bigger or a better one. They have over 12,000 music labels representing tens of thousands of artists, from over 60 countries. There are over 700 Canadian labels alone. To be sure, many are from the US, but this will reach every ethnic group that libraries serve. Ioda is known for their breadth, their depth and their quality, having garnered almost 100 Grammy nominations in the past two years. Ioda has just shy of 3 million songs in their catalog. Ioda is in addition to Sony and not a replacement, just in case you thought there was a catch!
What’s the benefit to libraries? A vastly better and deeper collection at no added cost. That’s right, we are just going to add this in at no cost! This makes any Freegal Library a must stop for music lovers. With our new search and browse capabilities (yes, we heard you : ) ), and our mobile apps, more people will be able to find more music, quicker than ever before.
Timing? We will start ingesting content in July, and it will continue over a few months. We should introduce all the Freegal 3.0 functionality by September 1.
And I can’t help myself…. Did you hear about our new e-book platform? I hate to say platform, because that makes people thing of platform fee. We have none! We will launch Freading (wonder where that name came from) September 1. We will have at least 20,000 ebooks to start and you don’t pay for them upfront, you have access to all of them. Payment is on a patron-driven, per-use basis. Please let us know if you would like more details.
I hope you and your patrons enjoy the continuing expansion and improvement of Freegal. Thank you for making it a tremendous success. As always, I appreciate any comments or suggestions.
