WebFeat or Quick Search

Today the Quick Search link under Find Information has been disconnected.  The was the link to WebFeat our federated search engine.  Since WebFeat’s end of live is December 2010, we decided to help with Virtual Library staff work load we would stop maintaining now rather than run it through December.

We now have Search By Topic which is similar to the subject topics on WebFeat and Databases A-Z.  The difference  of course you have to search individual databases.

Databases Discontinued

The following databases end July 31

Newsbank Package (Newsbank)

L.A.Times (Proquest)

Consulta (Oceano)

For the Las Vegas Review Journal we will be picking it up from Proquest.  Hopefully, it will go up near the same time the other is coming down.

The State Database package of EBSCO contains many newspapers.  So for patrons use to using Newsbank steer them towards EBSCO.  The newspapers can be found in Newspaper Source

Newspaper Source provides cover-to-cover full text for 45 national (U.S.) & international newspapers. The database also contains selective full text for 389 regional (U.S.) newspapers. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are also provided.

Obituaries Collection by ProQuest Discontinued

Due to the collection development budget being cut we have identified several databases to be dropped when they come due.  The Obituaries Collection by Proquest is one of those databases.  The link is working but will be removed early next week when Jon get’s back. We have elected to keep Obituaries and GenealogyBank by NewsBank as it is the obituary database which gets the most use by our patrons.

In our decision as to which databases to cut we looked at usage (views) and cost per view.  We also looked at  if we had more than one database which contained the same or similar information.  Some of you will be disappointed to see a favorite database be discontinued but in these tough economic times we have to be more economical.

As databases get discontinued you will be notifed here at the Virtual Library Notes, so stay tuned for further updates.
